A timeline

1976

  • Established by the Australian Government as a not-for-profit private health insurer, operating under the Health Insurance Commission.

1997

  • Medibank incorporation legislation passed by the Commonwealth, establishing Medibank as a standalone Commonwealth-owned enterprise and paving the way for corporatisation.

1998

  • Transferred from the Health Insurance Commission to the newly established Medibank Private Limited, with the Commonwealth remaining sole shareholder.

1999

  • Introduction of the 30% private health insurance rebate and Lifetime Health Cover helps drive growth in private health insurance participation.

2001

  • Celebrates 25 years.

2006

  • Travel insurance launched.

2007

  • Life insurance launched, followed by pet insurance.

2009

  • ahm acquired.
  • Health Services Australia transferred from the Australian Government, expanding preventative health and health management services.
  • Converted to a for-profit entity.

2010

  • McKesson Asia Pacific acquired, strengthening telehealth and healthcare services capabilities.

2013

  • ahm relaunched as a brand focused on simplicity.

2014

  • Australian Government announces intention to sell Medibank through an initial public offering (IPO).
  • Listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

2015

  • CareComplete launched to support people living with chronic conditions.

2016

  • Entire investment portfolio becomes tobacco-free.

2017

  • Live Better* launched to help more people improve their health and wellbeing. (*Previously named Free + Active)

2018

  • Home Support Services (HSS) acquired, expanding in-home healthcare services.

2019

  • Adopts all private health insurance reforms introduced by the Australian Government, including all optional measures.

2020

  • COVID financial support package introduced as part of commitment to not profit from the pandemic.
  • 10-year commitment to addressing loneliness announced.

2021

  • First Net Zero commitment announced.
  • Investment in GP and medical clinics begins.
  • Health services rebranded as Amplar Health.
  • 2030 vision to create the best health and wellbeing for Australia launched.

2022

  • Becomes the first Australian presenting partner of parkrun.
  • The first Live Better van (VANgo) hits the road, bringing health and wellbeing initiatives to rural and regional communities.

2023

  • Four-day work week experiment starts.

2024

  • Becomes the official health partner of the AFLW through a three-year partnership.

2025

  • Final COVID give back announced, bringing total amount of support since the start of the pandemic to a record $1.71 billion – this was the largest financial give back from any health insurer in Australia.
  • Announces a $50 million investment in mental health over five years.
  • Becomes one of Australia's largest corporate owners of GP clinic networks.
  • Live Better rewards program reaches more than one million participants.
  • Family Roast launched to help families have deeper, more meaningful conversations.

2026

  • Recognised at the AFR BOSS Best Places to Work Awards.
  • Publishes first Sustainability Report aligned to Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards.
  • Announces a new Net Zero target and pathway.
  • Medibank Group celebrates 50 Years Strong.
